About Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a British overseas territory. Sharing a border with Spain, it is located near the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar with stunning views out to Africa. Historically it has been an important base for the British Armed Forces and is the site of a Royal Navy base.
Known as the ‘Rock’, Gibraltar is steeped in history which has evolved from its strategic location. Visitors are met with breath-taking scenery, an abundance of birdlife, and architecture that captures the unique flavour of this Mediterranean city and its inhabitants. Gibraltar has no natural resources or arable land, and is just 6.5 square kilometers in size.
Retail therapy in the sunshine
Gibraltar is a popular destination for people moving overseas and for tourists. As a VAT free jurisdiction, Gibraltar’s popularity with visitors is enhanced by its offer of excellent value shopping in the shops on Main Street. And with the sun shining on average 300 days a year, the climate is typically Mediterranean so residents can expect warm, dry summers alternating with mild wet winters.
A piece of Britain on the Med
British symbolism is seen throughout Gibraltar, whether it’s the sight of double decker buses, traditional British post and telephone boxes or the Queen’s head on the Gibraltar currency notes, you cannot get away from the fact you are in a British territory. Bobbies are on the beat and Gibraltar even uses 250v 3-pin plugs! Although English is the official language, most Gibraltarians are fluent in both Spanish and English.
